Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen Random Things About Rain (Songs About Rain, What Rain Does, Why I Love Rain, Etc.)

1. One of my favorite songs about rain is "Rainy Days and Mondays" by the Carpenters. Basically because Karen Carpenter is one of my favorite singers of all time.

2. I love to go to sleep when it is pouring rain. The lovely sound of rain dripping on our tin roof is like a lullaby.

3. I don't really like to drive in rain. Basically because deep down I know I'm not the world's greatest driver. I mean I'm not a total dummy that cuts off a million people or anything, but I'm not really "comfortable" around terrible drivers or big trucks. The rain just amplifies these fears.

4. I love to curl up and read a good book when its raining.

5. Since its been raining here for the last three days, the song "All These Songs About Rain" has been stuck in my head.

6. I love that the fields and trees and everything are turning green because of the rain.

7. Just a few weeks ago it was so dry around here that when some of my friends went four wheeling they got covered head to toe in dust. So the rain is much needed!

8. If I am caught in a bad rain storm on a back road, and I can't see well, I am going to go slow. Getting on my tail doesn't force me to go faster. I may eventually pull off, but I may just drive all the way home going slow. Your best bet is probably to back off!!

9. Another line from a song that has been stuck in my head this morning is, "And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down..." This is from the movie "Bambi" I had to call my mom and ask her what movie it was from because it was really bugging me that the line was stuck in my head, and I couldn't remember where I'd heard it.

10. I hate it when I wear sandals and then it starts to rain.

11. I love the rainbows you see when the sun tries to break through the clouds when its raining.

12. My mom used to say that when the sun was shining and it was raining that the devil was beating his wife. I don't know why she said it or what it really means, but I said it the other day when I was riding down the road with my sister and my brother and it was raining and the sun was shining. They looked at me like I was crazy and said they'd never heard it before. They swore mom never said it. So I called mom and asked her. She told me she says that all the time. So I WAS RIGHT, and I've concluded I have a much better memory than either of my siblings.

13. And finally, a last song about rain..."Singing in The Rain" the Christian version. "I wanna be like Noah, singin' in the rain."

I Am From...

I saw this at Susan's site and I couldn't resist trying my own hand at it. It's a great little excercise. You can check out how to do your own at Fragments of Floyd. Hope you enjoy...

I am from porch swings, from Kool-aid and Kraft Macaroni.
I am from the green, growing fields and great fishing ponds.
I am from the tall pine trees, the solid oaks.
I am from Bible reading and dark hair and shortness, from Grandma Smith's temperment and Grandpa Smith's sermons and travelling to sing with Heavenly Vision (my family's group).
I am from the singing and writing.
From hearing you aren't too old for your wants to hurt and I love you's every night.
I am from an indpendent Baptist Church where Grandpa wasn't afraid to tell it like it was.

I'm from the Piedmont of North Carolina. From Mom's broccoli casserole and Grandma Smith's Biscuits.
From the times Ben, Crystal and I couldn't wait to leave our room on Christmas morning, or the times we spent boring hours going through Cade's Cove while blaring Gospel music, and the times I've spent dancing with my niece and nephew.
I am from lots of pictures displayed on the walls of our house and tons more pictures stored in digital cameras.

That's where I come from.

The Hokey Pokey

If any of you are very well acquainted with a toddler, you probably know about Hokey Pokey Elmo. This is one of the Elmo toys that was all the rage a while back. (For the life of me I don't really know why!)
Anyway, my niece has one. Actually she has two. She has the regular sized one and the mini one. It has become one of her favorite toys because it dances. It's a funny site to see her putting her arm in and her arm out and shaking it all about. We had a few good laughs at that.
But the really funny thing is that Saturday night she learned something new about Elmo. See, she accidentally knocked Elmo down. Elmo stopped singing the Hokey Pokey and said, "Uh oh, Elmo fell down. Can you please help Elmo up?" Raegan picked him up and game him a hug to comfort him. It was really cute.
Then I spent yesterday afternoon with her. She once again pulled out Elmo, but rather than doing the Hokey Pokey, she let Elmo get through like two lines of the song, then she knocked him down. She picked him up game him a hug then pushed his hand to once again play the Hokey Pokey. Once again, he got through two lines of the song, she knocked him down, picked him up, hugged him.
This went on and on. Very cute at first, but after a while I got really tired of Elmo's whining about falling down. Really, I would have preferred to hear the Hokey Pokey. I think those Elmo doll makers have some kind of conspiracy going!!

Randomness

Well, I was tagged by Aggiejenn and GiBee to tell you six random things about myself. So here goes...

1. I'm not a morning person. I know a good Christian girl should be able to wake up in the morning and be all sunshiney and happy. Call mornings my weakness. I have gotten better, but I still have mornings that I want to throw the alarm clock at the wall to silence it!

2. I like things to be symetrical. Like candles on a table, they have to be centered properly and distributed evenly. It drives me crazy otherwise. Or pictures on a wall. They have to be spaced evenly. If you have three, put them evenly apart or when I come to your house it'll drive me nuts.

3. I LOVE to sing. If any of you read my devo site you know this about me. I can't go a day without singing a song, whether it be with the radio or just singing to my niece or something. (I've been told I'm good, but you'd have to ask someone else to be sure. I'm my own worst critic, so I hear every flaw. But maybe one day I'll post a recording of me singing...maybe!)

4. I HATE to drive. This is weird to me because I LOVE to go places. I just don't want to be the one driving there. I don't mind if others drive my car to get there. I just don't want to be the one driving. Unless I'm in a RARE driving mood, and I mean very rare.

5. ALMOST all of my friends (other than blogging buddies and a few from high school) are either family or dating someone in my family or getting ready to marry someone in my family, and they all go to my church.

6. I am a UNC Tarheel Basketball fan. I bleed Carolina blue!

Okay...so now I'm supposed to tag other people now to do this...so here they are...Christy,Tracy, Peggy, Pink Chihuahua Princess, Corina, and Faith.

Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen Reasons This Won't Be a Thought Provoking List
1. Because I missed work yesterday because I was sick
2. Because I have like a million things to do today because I wasn't here yesterday.
3. Because my brain is pretty much mush because I still don't feel great.
4. Because the piles of things on my desk are calling my name.
5. Because I have to stop like every 5 seconds and sneeze.
6. Because I have deadlines looming.
7. Because I can't seem to get focused even though I really need to.
8. Because I need to get something besides blogging done today.
9. Because I have a headache even though I took Aleve (this may not be my drug of choice from now on!)
10. Because I'd really rather be laying in bed watching a good movie.
11. Because there are people talking around me distracting my thought process.(I normally can tune this out. Apparently I'm just feeling extra blah today or something!)
12. Because I need to make some calls.
13. Because I just don't feel like thinking so I can't make you think!!

Tuesday's Treasure!

Well, today's treasure isn't something I can put a picture of, but its precious to me none-the-less. The treasure is the memory of my dad singing silly songs. We'd be travelling on a long trip, and my dad would break into, "Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog" or "Don't Worry, Be Happy" or "Great, Green Gobs of Greasy, Grimy Gopher Guts." (My mom's all-time favorite!!)
It was hilarious. Now my dad has an awesome singing voice, and I've heard him sing thousands of songs over the years, and all of those memories are special to me. But there's just something about the thought of my dad singing those silly songs to us. Why? I guess because he sang them just to see us smile. He'd do anything to see us smile. That means more to me than I can tell you!
So make someone smile today. You never know what it will mean to them!!

A Weird Little Meme

Well Cozy Reader has tagged me with "A Weird Meme."

Here's what I'm told I must do:
1. I must make a list of six weird things about myself (I'm not weird at all. How will I think of enough things?) Then I must tag six people to tell me how they are weird. (This part should be easy, I know lots of weirdos! LOL!)
2. I must go to the blogs of those I've tagged and leave them a comment telling them they've been tagged and send them back to my site to find out more!!

So here's my list:
1. Other than the number 7 I hate odd numbers.
2. It bugs me when one of the slots in my six-disc changer in my car is empty. (I mean why have the slots if you aren't gonna have a cd in all of them. Who cares that you can only listen to one at a time?)
3. I'm the only short one of all my cousins on both sides (I find this unfair, but I'm not mad enough about it to stretch myself or anything!)
4. I have to go to sleep on my right side with my arm under my pillow, hugging another pillow, with another pillow under my feet. Otherwise I can't sleep.
5. The root in my bottom left front tooth just disappeared. The dentist doesn't know why.
6. I can't type with jewelry on. It drives me insane!

So here's the people I'm tagging:
Tracy, Christy, Susan, Dawn, Kelly, and Janet.

A Little Traffic Jam Fun

Well, I hope everyone had a great Easter! I did (for more info on the awesome Easter service we had yesterday morning at my church check out my devo site!)
Anyway, I had a lot of fun times this weekend, both in and out of church! As I said Friday, I went to Carowinds. Lots of fun. I went with my brother, his fiance, and my cousin Tracy (yeah, the one who thinks she's a rapper, this made for a lot of laughs!!)
We rode all the roller coasters and all that and had a great time. But the most laughs we had were actually on the way to Carowinds. If you don't understand this, you've never ridden anywhere with my brother. He can actually make traffic seem fun.
Well of course with it being Easter weekend, there was bound to be a wreck on 85 South. So we're sitting here (admittedly a bit impatient to get to Carowinds), then my brother decides to make the people in every car around us smile. As we're slowly rolling past car after car, he leans out the window and says, "A little traffic jam fun. I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 100, what is it?"
Now this may sound crazy to you. Believe me, I was ducking in the backseat at first out of embarrassment. But you know what. Every person he asked started smiling. And all of us were laughing our heads off. So the next time you find yourself a bit perturbed at stalled traffic, lean your head out the window and ask the perturbed person beside you what number you're thinking of.

Fun Fun Friday!!

Okay, I know I've been a bum lately about posting, but I'm not gonna post a lot today! Why? Because I'm going to Carowinds! Yay, fun times! I LOVE roller coasters. I am so excited. So I hope you all have fun times on this Good Friday, and I'll give you a shout out from Top Gun!!!

Thirteen Things About My Sister
1. She is a great mother to my niece and nephew
2. She trusts me (she let me keep her kids for the last three days, thats why I haven't been blogging!!)
3. I also trust her (I can go to her with anything!)
4. She is our family's "worrier" I never have to worry about anything because I have my sister!
5. She loves Third Day as much as I do. (She's actually responsible for my love of Third Day, Thanks, sis!!)
6. When we were younger and shared a room before she got married, we'd stay awake late at night playing this crazy rhyming game where if you said something that didn't rhyme, you lost.
7. She has an awesome singing voice.
8. She and I look alike (this is weird to me. As I said last week, my brother and I look alike. However, people say that my sister and brother don't really look alike. Apparently I'm the child that is a mix betwixt my parents. My brother looks like dad, my sister looks like mom. I got the best of both!! LOL!)
9.She is absolutely terrified of needles (Honestly I don't know how she gave birth to two children!)
10. She cried and cried when I had to have my appendix out b/c she loves me so much!
11. She cried even more when I had to have brain surgery last year. As I said above, I didn't have to worry about this because she had it covered!
12. She's seven years older than me, but despite some rough times in our growing up years, we are as close as two sisters can be!
13. She's my other best friend (like I said last week, my brother is one of them!!)

Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen Funny Things About My Brother
1. He can never sit still (I mean never. Even when he's in a chair, he's drumming on the arm or playing the piano in the air. I seriously believe this is why God called him to preach, if he wasn't going to sit still in church, God was going to use his constant moving for His glory.)
2. He spends more time getting ready than anyone else in our family. (It's not really his fault. He has been "blessed" with a cow-lick, so his hair takes a bit more taming)
3. He can make me laugh even when I'm so mad at him I want to cry. (This can be somewhat annoying but it's very endearing!)
4. He looks like me. (At least that's what everyone tells me, we both look like our daddy!)
5. He broke a tooth once when he raced across the entire house to try to be able to jump high enough to slap the highest door-jam in our house. He missed and hit the dresser. Mom wasn't too happy about this one.
6. He doesn't have a good running history with pets (he accidentally threw a kitten in the fire once, it was sitting on a small log, fortunately my dad was there to save it! He also locked a dog in our garage once, where our wood stove was and there was a lot of smoke. The dog got emphyzema and died, but the dog had a habit of hiding under stuff, so we think he had hidden under something. There are many more. None of which are really Ben's fault, but trust keep your animals clear of him!)
7. He can play any instrument he wants. (Piano, drums, guitar, even the clarinet in high school band, seriously this makes me sick because I can't play the radio without fuzz!)
8. He is addicted to diet Coke. (This is gross to me. Diet Coke is the worst drink in the world!!)
9. He is a great preacher. (He can even keep the attention of young kids, and he is very faithful to study the Bible to see what God has for him)
10. He has funk toes (really its just ingrown toe-nails, but he says that I have some funk disease because apparently I'm falling apart, which I didn't realize, but he did, I guess he's a doctor or something! Anyway, I had to say that I'm not the only one with "the funk"!)
11. The only movie that he has ever sat through completely that I like is "The Lord of the Rings" The only other movies he'll sit through are those with no plot at all (for example: "The Sponge Bob Movie")
12. He will always be my little brother, no matter how much taller than me he gets
13. And last but not least, he's one of my best friends (I'll tell you about my other one, my sister, next week!)

Wednesday's Word

Today's word was found on a funny words site. It's something I know we've all done. So I decided I'd share it because I thought it was pretty funny. The word is: accidentalpurposity.

Actual meaning: when you don't want people to think that you mean to do something but secetly it was meant to happen

Meaning to me: when you don't want to look mean, but you really don't like something or want to do something, so you purposely do something that makes it impossible for you to do something

Okay, so here's the deal. I love this word. It gets to the epitomy of human nature. I mean seriously, we are all selfish, and if we don't want to do something, it's human nature to try to get out of it.
I'll give you an example. When my brother and I were little, we'd get home from school like 30 minutes before mom got home from work. I was like 11 or so at the time. Mom would leave the back door unlocked for us (It's okay, we lived in the middle of nowhere), and we were to immediately go into the house and lock the door and wait for her. We WERE NOT to play outside until she got home.
Well, it was a nice spring day, and my brother and I didn't want to be trapped in the house. We wanted to play, so we locked the door and made it look like mom had accidentally forgotten to leave it open, when in all reality, we had purposely locked ourselves out of the house.
What we didn't know was that mom had gone back that morning and made certain that she'd unlocked the door because she thought she'd forgotten. We pretty much got busted, and we were trapped in the house for the rest of the night. So if you're thinking about doing something with "accidentalpurposity" remember most of the time it blows up in your face because someone usually figures out your sneakiness!

Tuesday's Treasure!

This week's treasure is from my Grandma and Grandpa Smith, two of my favorite people in the world. This is a lei they brought me back from Hawaii. (By the way, its not really easy to get a good pic of one of these!) Anyway, my grandparents have been married 55 years. On their 50th anniversary, our family sent them to Hawaii because it had always been my Grandpa's dream to take my Grandma there. He'd been when he was in the navy, and he'd always wanted to see it again. So, my family sent them. Grandma loved it, just like Grandpa had been sure she would. They brought something back for all of us in the family, nothing huge, but something to show how much they appreciated the trip. They got back from their trip on September 11, 2001. They flew through Washington, DC. My Grandpa had even "complained a bit" he said because they got put on a "puddle jumper" plane as he called it to fly from DC to Greensboro, NC. Now he's very thankful for it because the big jet that left right before they did ended up being one of the hijacked planes. I'm very thankful that God protected my grandparents that day. So I treasure this momento from Hawaii because it reminds me that sometimes God protects us even when we don't realize it.

I've Only Played for a Week

Well, like I said, dad came through his surgery fine. But even with a successful surgery, a family spends a good deal of time in the waiting room, especially when the patient is in ICU, and the number of visitors is limited to two at a time. So me, my sister, and my brother spent lots of hours in the waiting room while mom took one friend or another back to see dad.
Fortunately, we have good friends who were willing to sit with us and help us pass the time. Most of our time was passed by playing Rook, one of my favorite card games. Now, my brother Ben doesn't play Rook because he never really could grasp the concept, and he's not much for sitting still for any period of time, so it was me, my friend Melissa, and my sister Crystal who wanted to play, but we really needed a fourth. There just so happened to be a kid in the waiting room whose ears perked up when we said "Rook," and he asked to play with us.
Now the kid was only 12, so my sister partnered him up with me (of course) She said it was because Melissa was just learning, and the kid was just 12, so it wouldn't be fair for us to be together on a team against novices. But I knew it was really that she thought she'd be able to beat me because she put me with the kid.
She was WRONG!
This kid was good. He knew when to throw the right cards and when not to. Pretty much we stomped Crystal and Melissa into the ground (250 to -140) I'm not bragging, I just thought it was funny!
The funniest part was when Melissa said, "Well, I just learned today, so I'm just a novice. That's why we lost."
The kid turned to her and said, "I've only played for a week!"
After that the Rook cards were put away, and no one mentioned playing again. I guess losing to a smart-mouthed 12 year old makes you lose the desire to play Rook!

Thanks for the Prayers!

I just wanted to post a note on here to let everyone know that my dad came through surgery just fine. I could really feel all the prayers. Hopefully, he will be able to come home on Monday at the latest. Thanks so much for praying. I know that God was listening! Check out my devo site for more info!
